Pure Football

Pure Football is an interesting addition to the world of sports themed video games, though I’m not sure who it’s being aimed at. When I think of football games, only two really come to mind, FIFA and PES. Both of these long established games do things basically the same.

UBISOFT however have decided to approach the game of football from a slightly different angle. Quite literally. The default view is from behind the player, not the side on view of the pitch that most of us are used to. This of course might be the better way to play, but fortunately for me, you can change it to the more traditional view as there was a lot more to contend with then just a different view point.

The weird thing with Pure Football is that I was under the impression – I’m sure I’d read somewhere – that this was going to be a serious football game. Rather it’s a more arcady approach, similar to FIFA Street than any traditional football game.  Read the rest of this entry »

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

Posted by famousfive On August - 25 - 20103 COMMENTS

I grew up playing strategy games on PC.

Blizzard titles were my bread and butter, so it didn’t take much to convince me to break my long PC drought (other than a bit of Civilization IV here and there) to pick up Starcraft 2, Blizzard’s 11 years in the making sequel to a game which was acclaimed as the best strategy game ever.

Well, after working my way through the campaign of Starcraft 2, not to mention about 35 multiplayer games, to say that I have mixed feelings is an understatement.

First of all, let me say that this is a fantastically crafted game. The production values are sky-high, the gameplay is fine-tuned and the cut-scenes are gorgeous.  Read the rest of this entry »

Fallout New Vegas Director Explains Its Definitive Ending

Posted by famousfive On August - 24 - 20101 COMMENT

While Fallout: New Vegas is pretty much done (at the moment, the development team at Obsidian is focused purely on bugfixing, since all the content is complete), some recent news has come out about its definitive ending. Much like the original version of Fallout 3 (pre-Broken Steel DLC), New Vegas simply ends – the player won’t be able to go on to play the game some more after the ending. Destructoid has heard one reason from New Vegas senior producer Jason Bergman, and we got an additional explanation from project director Josh Sawyer reproduced below:

“We put a lot of effort into the ending slides – we know those slides are really popular with people so we want to make sure there’s a huge amount of variety and reactivity with that stuff. We weren’t really focused on new features so much as to add a really rich sense of reactivity to the players and the choices they make.”  Read the rest of this entry »

BioShock Heads For The Clouds

2K Games have announced that BioShock Infinite, a first-person shooter, is currently in development at Irrational Games, the studio behind the original BioShock which has sold over 4 million units worldwide. Set in 1912, BioShock Infinite introduces an entirely new narrative experience that lifts players out of the familiar confines of Rapture and rockets them to Columbia, an immense city in the sky. BioShock Infinite is currently planned for release during calendar 2012.

Originally conceived as a floating symbol of American ideals at a time when the United States was emerging as a world power, Columbia is dispatched to distant shores with great fanfare by a captivated public. What begins as a brand new endeavor of hope turns drastically wrong as the city soon disappears into the clouds to whereabouts unknown. Read the rest of this entry »

Modern Warfare 2 Inception Demo Released

Posted by famousfive On August - 10 - 20106 COMMENTS

There’s got to be a good reason why it took nine months for Activision to release a demo version of last year’s biggest game.

Activision released a single-player demo for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of its hit game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Wednesday. Modern Warfare 2 came out last November and sold like hotcakes, moving nearly 10 million copies by March of this year.

Tom Chick at Syfy’s Fidgit blog wisely points out that the demo, recreating the snowbound early moments of the full Modern Warfare 2 game, bears a striking resemblance to one of the dream-within-a-dream action sequences in this year’s biggest film, Inception.

If you subscribe to the notion that most everyone who intends to buy and play Modern Warfare 2 has already done so, then the idea of Activision attempting wring a couple more sales on the back of a Hollywood hit doesn’t seem all that crazy.

It should be noted that the forthcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops also has a sequence that re-creates a frigid assault on a snowy enemy fortress. With any luck, Inception will be out on DVD by then. – GameLife
