Stoked

Posted by admin On October - 16 - 2009

stoked 360I’m not sure if it was the original Playstation or the PS2, but there was a series of snowboarding games that were a lot of fun. You got to board down a pre-defined track, with lots of convenient things to trick off. The gameplay was so simple. You could just button mash your way to a high score, and landing was easy, in-fact the Playstation just about did it for you. It was one of the most fun games around. Sadly however, like Wii Fit it got old real quick. Once the initial fun wore off there was no real challenge worth hanging around for. This probably explains why I never considered playing any snowboarding games on my XBox (I don’t even know if there was any!) or until recently, on my 360.  Read the rest of this entry »

FIFA 10

Posted by admin On October - 12 - 2009

FIFA 10Soccer, I’d always thought, was a game for wimps. I’d never shown the slightest interest in it, and I wouldn’t have been able to tell you the difference between a lob and a through ball if I tried.

And then came FIFA 09. Roughly six months later, I follow the game of soccer religiously. Heck, I even have my own fantasy Premier League team. It’s that bad. And I blame it all on FIFA 09. Read the rest of this entry »

Colin McRae: Dirt 2

Posted by admin On October - 9 - 2009

DIRT2There is no other form of motor racing that offers the wide-ranging possibilities and sheer terror filled adrenaline pumping rides as off road racing. There is also no other games developer that can quite nail the experience as good as Codemasters. As GRID was a departure from what fans expecting from the Race Driver series, so Dirt 2 makes some serious changes, appealing to a wider ranging audience by giving Dirt 2 and X-Games feel to it, and straying away from the pure rally focus, incorporating a range of disciplines that makes the game much more accessible and more enjoyable.  Read the rest of this entry »

Halo 3 ODST

Posted by admin On September - 28 - 2009

halo3 ODST2I think it’s fair to say up front that I’m not a big Halo fan. I’m not a hater either; I’ve just never got into Halo as much as some other FPS. I think I prefer my games (and I know I’m going to get mocked for saying this) to be grounded in some degree of reality. If it’s a FPS, I want to be using a gun that actually exists, even if it’s not in general use quite yet. I really would rather have an obsolete World War 2 rifle than a plasma gun any day. If it’ a racing game I don’t want to be able to bounce off walls with on damage – there has to be consequences.  Read the rest of this entry »

Halo 3 ODST

Posted by admin On September - 27 - 2009

Halo 3 ODSTHow do you start a review for what Microsoft would likely call ‘One of the most anticipated games of the year’, a game which got a name change and went from being a stand alone expansion to a full retail game not to mention a halo game without a halo, mention of a halo and indeed no Master Chief. Probably with a big sigh and a gritting of teeth.  Read the rest of this entry »

G-Force

Posted by admin On September - 22 - 2009

g-force gameOk, I have to be honest, reviewing a game based on an up-coming kids film was not high on my to do list. In fact, it never made it to my list. Add to this the unavoidable truth that you get to play the part of a Special Agent Guinea Pig and you don’t have a game that on the surface screams, “You need to play me.”

Yes, I did say Guinea Pig.

If you’ve never heard to G-Force, it’s in cinemas this week, and if you have young kids, they will love you forever – well, for a couple of hours anyway – if you take them. They’ll love you even more if on the way home you buy them the G-Force game, because by the way, it’s actually rather good.  Read the rest of this entry »

Mini Ninjas

Posted by admin On September - 18 - 2009

mini ninjasHeroes often come in small packages, and Hiro is no exception. His adventure however is huge. The world is on the brink of chaos, as darkness spreads through the land – thanks mainly to the Evil Samurai Warlord and his quest for world domination.  Using his magic skills, the Evil Samurai Warlord has been turning forest critters into Evil Samurai Soldiers, and has brought forth the Warlord’s reign of terror.  Read the rest of this entry »

Star Wars : The Clone Wars – Republic Heroes

Posted by urbankiwi On September - 8 - 2009

starwarsclonewarsOnce again we are offered another episode in the ever growing Star Wars franchise. This time the game targets the story gaps between Season 1 and Season 2 of ‘The Clone Wars’ TV series.

You can play as any one of the major Jedi characters, or as a Clone Trooper, while you “take on a multi-faceted adventure to stop a mysterious Techno Assassin’s destructive plot”.

The game promises to be very entertaining, and if your a fan of the TV series you would be forgiven for being a little excited about it.  Read the rest of this entry »

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Posted by admin On September - 4 - 2009

batmanAfter months of waiting, Batman is finally here. There have been only a couple games released so far this year that caught my eye, and frankly I have been a little disappointed with them. But I knew in my heart of hearts that Batman wouldn’t let me down, Batman always delivers, well… except for some of those awful movies.

Batman Arkham Asylum is a sandbox rendition of the island institute with a linear propelled story. Similar in some ways to Mirrors Edge you have to get from A to Z but you can choose what letters you want in between. The controls are intuitive and easy to pick up so travelling around as Batman actually feels pretty authentic, you don’t fall off buildings and die, they only mapped relevant spaces so you don’t get lost in amongst a labyrinth of hallways and if you miss a jump and fall into a bottomless pit or cloud of Jokers gas you can hit the grappling button and escape your doom. If this all sounds to easy or sounds like they have padded the walls to keep you safe let me remind you, YOU’RE BATMAN! Batman doesn’t fall to his death, Batman doesn’t get lost and some of the walls were already padded ‘cause it’s an asylum.  Read the rest of this entry »

Giana Sisters

Posted by admin On September - 3 - 2009

giana sistersIt could be seen as ironic that the Giana Sisters has been released exclusively on the Nintendo DS, with Nintendo’s blessing, especially as the original game has such an interesting history.

The Great Giana Sisters was a platform game developed by Time Warp Productions in 1987 and published by Rainbow Arts for the Amiga, Amstrad, Atari and Commodore 64.

However it fell foul of Nintendo’s legal powers due to its explicit similarity to their own Super Mario Bros. Consequently Rainbow Arts was forced to withdraw the game from sale and even had to cancel the release of the completed ZX Spectrum version.  Read the rest of this entry »
