EA: Annual Releases Ruined Medal of Honor

Posted by famousfivenz On May - 5 - 2010

Though the last few entries in the series have proven disappointing, the Medal of Honor franchise once stood as one of the top first-person shooters out there. So what went wrong? Gamasutra sat down with EA Games president Frank Gibeau, who shared his thoughts on the series’ failures, as well as what he hopes to correct with this year’s game.

“I think any franchise that’s been around for a long time, they get in a rut, they become over-annualized. They run out of innovation,” explained the EA exec. “The team pounds on a game every year, and they get tired, they run out of time and effort to be innovative and try and take some new risks. That was my view on how the franchise has fallen.”

Gibeau doesn’t pin the blame solely on yearly sequels, however. “I also felt like the online component wasn’t getting enough attention,” Gibeau confessed. “Any shooter worth its salt is going to be really breakthrough in its online play, and I think Battlefield: Bad Company is a good example of that, I think Modern Warfare 2 is a good example of that, I think Halo clearly is a good example of that. The power of a franchise in the shooter category is in the online component and modes.” -1up

According to Perry, they have the game streaming from a Gaikai server over regular Wifi. And although he didn’t talk about how well it worked, it’s a promising tease for WoW players and/or iPad owners. “We’re really interested to see what works well with streaming and will be trying just about every genre of game, on every device possible as we explore server-side computing,” he added in his post. – 1up

Fallout: New Vegas Wants You To Stay Hydrated

Posted by famousfive On May - 3 - 2010

Where Fallout 3 is involved, the idea of “more of the same” is never a bad thing, especially when we’re still playing the game a year and a half after its 2008 debut. Fortunately, Fallout: New Vegas, due this fall, is more than more of the same. Here’s how.

Picking up three years after the events that played out in Fallout 3’s Capital Wasteland, this full sequel casts players a courier left for dead in Nevada’s Mojave Wasteland. As such, players will have the option to select their character’s age during the initial creation (or, in this case, re-creation) process, in addition to choosing their starting S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats. While they might not be a vault dweller, the game finds a way of outfitting them with the familiar Pip-Boy 3000 wearable computer.  Read the rest of this entry »

Jordan Tresson wins PlayStation GT Academy 2010

Posted by famousfive On April - 23 - 2010

Jordan Tresson has been announced as the winner of GT Academy 2010. The 21-year-old Frenchman completed a short head-to-head test today on Silverstone’s new Grand Prix circuit against friend and rival Luca Lorenzini. The pair drove five flying laps each in the 420bhp Nissan 370Z GT4 race car that Tresson will now campaign in the 2010 European GT Cup series.

The announcement of Tresson’s victory is the culmination of a process that started in December 2009 when the GT Academy time trial went live across 17 countries. Over 1.2 million people downloaded the special version of the Gran Turismo game on PlayStation®3 to enter the completion. The fastest twenty from each country then competed for their chance to attend the five-day international final, the GT Academy ‘boot camp’ at Silverstone. Jordan and Luca were chosen as the best of the 18 Academy finalists by judges Johnny Herbert, Eddie Jordan, Sabine Schmitz and Rob Barff. An intensive six-week period has seen them racing at various UK club races each weekend to qualify for an International C Race Licence.
