Criterion Games is better known for Burnout these days, but at one point they also developed a very good first-person shooter in Black. Senior designer Stuart Black has since moved on, and is now teaming up with Codemasters to work on another FPS.
No details yet, but Computer and Video Games is reporting that the team will be 80 people strong, and will include Split/Second senior producer Andrew Wilson. It will utilize the Codemasters Ego Engine, which last powered Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.
“Codemasters’ Guildford Studio is key to our overall development strategy and this year has opened further positions across its design, programming and art teams,” Codemasters vice president of development Gavin Cheshire said. [1up]

While not exactly surprising, Activision confirmed that they are committed to turning Call of Duty into an annual franchise at today’s Q4 conference call. We’re calling it Call of Duty 7 for lack of an official name, but Activision unfortunately didn’t share any details on the title’s setting or time period. After pointing out that this year’s profits were aided by the enormous success of Modern Warfare 2, the company noted they do not plan to see the same success with this year’s installment. The original Bad Company spinoff in the Battlefield series kept the franchise’s setting firmly in modern times, but if the Bad Company 2 ESRB description is true, you’ll be seeing a return to WWII in the sequel. At the very least, the game’s opening will bring players back to the Eastern front, with the ESRB description saying, “In single-player mode, players conduct missions on an unnamed Japanese island during World War II and then move into the modern day through jungles, deserts, and snowy terrain.” Read the rest of this entry »
