Do You Suffer From Mapathy?

Posted by famousfivenz On March - 10 - 2010

Infinity Ward are trying to be cute with the launch of a teaser site detailing when the first of two promised map packs for Modern Warfare 2 will be released. To be honest, I’m certainly not suffering from ‘mapathy’ – I stopped playing MW2 as soon as Bad Company 2 came out. Sure, I’ll download the new map pack, along with millions of other people the world around, but I’m not overly excited about the prospect. With rumours that two of the five maps will be straight copies from Modern Warfare, and the cynical knowledge that one of the new maps is bound to be a small private match map, leaving us with essentially two maps to play to enjoy, only one of which will actually be enjoyable. Yes, you can call me cynical, I don’t care. As for releasing it on a Tuesday (or if you live in New Zealand you’ll probably have to wait for Wednesday) is that really prime time for Modern Warfare? I would have figured a Thursday release to give people time to download it for Friday and Saturday night gaming would have been better? Or is it that the financial year runs to the end of March for Activision?

Sony Announces SOCOM 4

Posted by famousfivenz On March - 5 - 2010

Sony has officially announced its “secret sequel,” and as it turns out, it’s a proper follow-up to the beloved SOCOM series: SOCOM 4. The game is being developed by Zipper Interactive, and it’s due out this fall. Many assumed MAG was the developer’s next step in military action, but apparently they plan to keep the two running concurrently. The blog promises to continue to support MAG after SOCOM 4 launches.

The plot revolves around a military coup in a South Asian country. Players take control of a five-man squad to stop him in the single-player campaign. IGN reports that the 12-hour mission features motion-captured characters in the directorial style of Uncharted 2. All weapons and supplies will be either given at the start of the game, or found inside the missions, to replicate the feeling of searching for supplies in a combat scenario. Of course, multiplayer is back as well, promising 32-person multiplayer with new Special Forces units. Other than that, details are sparse, but we’re sure to see more in the coming months. [1up]

L.A. Noire To Set New Bar For 3D Performances

Posted by famousfivenz On March - 4 - 2010

“Traditional motion capture could never bring to life the subtle nuances of the chaotic criminal underworld of L.A. Noire in the same way as MotionScan,” claims Team Bondi’s Brendan McNamara, commenting on MotionScan. It’s the new motion capture technology being employed first by his studio’s moody crime game, L.A. Noire. In a press release yesterday, Depth Analysis announced the new tech and touted its many applications in the forthcoming Rockstar title.

Allegedly, MotionScan uses “32 high-definition cameras to capture true-to-life three-dimensional performances at up to 30 frames per second,” thus allowing for the supposedly “emotional performances” that McNamara says make L.A. Noire “a truly unique and revolutionary game.” Aside from the claims of higher quality, the mocap system supposedly has lower operation costs due to a streamlined post-production processing time. With any luck, we’ll finally see all this big talk in action — and compare ir with other performance-capture scenes in games like Uncharted 2, Alan Wake and Heavy Rain — this September when the game arrives on store shelves.
