Oh, I’ll probably rent it to try it out. But I thought Fallout 3 was overrated so I am not too amped.
Fallout 3 had a cool story, great atmosphere and I liked the VATS system.
But the game engine was crap (I had the same issue with Oblivion). The shooting controls were sluggish, but the main killjoy for me was the weirdly bad character models. And how EVERYONE turns and looks you straight in the face when you talk to them. Sorry, but Mass Effect 2’s cinematic RPG experience makes the Fallout series feel like Pacman.
This is just my opinion of course, but I thought that the character models looked stiff and were badly animated. That seemed to come up as a regular criticism in the reviews I read, too. Of course, the atmosphere and landscape were gorgeous.
Fallout 3 isn’t a BAD game at all. But I do think it was overrated, and I think at times it got quite boring. Mass Effect 2 and Fallout 3 probably have similar amounts of talking. Of course that will put some people off, and there isn’t much that can be done about that. Some people just like shooting things or playing sports games. Some people like action movies and never pick up a book. What can you do? I think they are missing out, but that’s life.
The difference between talking in ME2 and Fallout 3 is that in ME2 you choose the general tone of what to say, but Shepard says it in his own way. So the dialogue is more interesting because of that, and the camera pans are more cinematic. Almost every reviewer has recognised this as a superior dialogue system.
In Fallout 3 (and Dragon Age… and MANY other RPGs) your character doesn’t actually have voice acting. You choose EXACTLY what to say so dialogue is much more skippable.
I think New Vegas will be a great game. I’m looking forward to it. I just hope they make improvements that can take it from the 8 out of 10 game Fallout 3 was to the 10 out of 10 game Mass Effect 2 was.
Different strokes for different folks I guess. I’m not a RPG fan, but Fallout enticed me with it’s post nuclear neo future styles. That and the fact that you had guns. Sure Mass Effect has guns too, but it feels like it wants to be a FPS with talking instead of shooting. New Vegas is probably the only game this year that I would slap down money for a pre-order. I’m that confident that it will be another awesome game.
WALL-E 2?
Rhett – get a life. It’s gonna rock and you know it.

Fallout 3 was NOT overrated. Weirdly bad character models? What are you talking about. And it is polite to look at the person you’re talking to….
As for Mass Effect 2, I guess that game is ok, it you like watching long, beautifully rendered cut scenes and TALKING a lot.
New Vegas, I can’t wait to see you.

For me that “pre-order” game would be God of War 3, except I don’t have a PS3!
But New Vegas and Bioshock 2 look very rentable.
