With Modern Warfare 2 only days away, many people are getting in their last frantic hours with Modern Warfare 1. It says something about the game that years after release, you can still find thousands online every night. Here’s a look back at our five favourite multiplayer maps from Call of Duty 4.
Crash
This map set the standard for Call of Duty multiplayer. In recent interviews, Infinity Ward staff mentioned that they see it as a measuring stick for creating new maps. For good reason: it’s incredibly well balanced. There are great sniping positions, but they are not without risk. You can run and gun if you like. Really, whatever your play style, Crash has something for you.
Pipeline
This is really a map where an assault rifle is your best friend. It’s not a snipe-fest like Creek, but the sight lines are long. Taking pot shots from the top floor of either of the two building is fun, but then so is sneaking through the tunnels, if playing the ninja is your thing. Just watch yourself in the open.
Broadcast
Sub-machine gun heaven. Grab yourself a silenced AK74u or P90 and you are away laughing. This map has some intense close-quarters action, but there are also plenty of spots to camp, if that is your thing, like inside the room with a great view of the TV studio below. Discerning snipers will find a home in one of the outdoor buildings. All in all, Broadcast is the only map from the variety map pack that we still enjoy playing.
Overgrown
A map that would seem tailor-made for snipers, and rest assured you can certainly play that way. However, some of our best ghosting has been done here, so slap on a silencer and get to sneaking. There is plenty of good cover available, and the fire-fights over the two story building by the water tank are intense. And, if you are really smart, you can even get onto the roof.
Backlot
Plenty to do here. Snipe from one of the many good camping spots, get on a mounted machine gun (and see how many seconds you last), or run and gun. There is a lot to keep you occupied whatever you do. Again, the key to this map’s success is how balanced it is. But, if you are an experienced player, you can really rack up the kills.
Three We’re Happy to See the Back Of
Ambush
Maybe it’s simply our own ineptitude on this map, but it just isn’t fun. The design seems to encourage a defensive mindset.
Bog
Horribly dreary, this map forces you to crawl around taking shots when you can, which is rarely. All too often you end up with a sniper’s bullet in your brain about two seconds after spawning.
Chinatown
Possibly the most “skipped” map in Call of Duty 4, Chinatown is a chore. It’s maze-like layout means that teamwork is almost impossible, and getting on any kind of a roll is out of the question.

I love the Killhouse, absolutely frantic and hilarious, and Bloc is another of my favourites.
Pipeline with a shotty in the tunnels, excellent.
I agree Bog and Ambush I hate with a vengeance, tho ,camping on the mg in Ambush is ok.
I am finding alot of negative comments about MW2 on some servers about dedicated servers,?, but I guess time will tell.
MW1 isn`t going to go away anytime soon.
